Kunoichi (Japanese: くノ一, kunoichi) refers to female ninjas. The term originates from a way of writing the character for “woman” (女) broken down into the components ku (く), no (ノ), and ichi (一). Like their male counterparts, kunoichi served as scouts, spies, assassins, and thieves; they also used their gender to get close to targets, employ close‑combat techniques, act as informants, or poison enemies. Masters of disguise, concealment, assassination, diversion, and reconnaissance, they often hid their identities with masks, veils, or other face coverings, or simply changed their clothing. Notable ninja clans traditionally include Iga, Fūma, and Kōga, and their dress varied by group.
